Our Christian Covenant

“God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our own image and likeness…” (Genesis 1:26)

We are a community of faith committed to seeking justice for all people that the church and society have, in the past and in the present, ignored, wronged, persecuted and rejected.  We seek to be reconciled with our brothers and sisters, each one created in God’s image and reflecting a diversity of culture, physical appearance, gender and sexuality, ability and opinion.

“God saw everything that God had made and indeed, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31)

We have faith that God created us as complex and diverse creatures and sent Jesus as the Christ to liberate us from the sins of intolerance, oppression and hatred.  In response to this faith we strive to be both open and fully affirming of God’s creation in all its diversity, beauty and preciousness.

Jesus said:  “…go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:18-20)

We are called by God to gather together to share in the life of God and to proclaim the Good News of God’s love poured out for us in the gift of Jesus the Christ.  We gather to share our joys and sorrows, victories and struggles, to serve others and to minister to each other.  We rejoice in our unions and mourn our separations and celebrate God’s transforming love for every person.  We go on this mission from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth.

Amos said: “…let justice roll down like the waters, and righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (Amos 5:24)

We witness that God has given us tools of transformation, including the Holy Bible, reason and personal experience, and the traditions, struggles, conflicts, mistakes and glories of the 2000-year history of the one and undivided Church.  We have faith that with God’s help we will learn how to continuously create and recreate a church in which the celebration of unity, diversity and the ministry of justice, peace and love are not only possible but also powerful and transforming.  We accept God’s call to be loving sons and daughters and to establish the rule of God’s love and peace on earth now and for eternity.

And Jesus said:  “Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this all will know that you are my disciples…” (John 13:34-35)
